This peptide is amino acids 65 to 76 fragment of ubiquitin known as Ub2. It was shown to have activity against fungal and bacterial pathogens. Ub2 is capable of mediating significant antibacterial activity against both M. smegmatis and M. tuberculosis. Ubiquitin has been identified as a constituent of several extracts that have antibacterial activity, including medium conditioned of insect cells, the mucosal layers of colon and cervix, and the secretory granules of chromaffin cells. The main function of ubiquitin is labeling proteins for proteasomal degradation.
