| Description |
This is amino acids 20 to 29 fragment of the rat islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) or corresponding amylin fragment. This rat, hamster and degu IAPP sequence does not give rise to fibrils. Only a small number of animal species including human and cat is known to show amyloidogenesis with this sequence. The sequence Ala-Ile-Leu-Ser-Ser, corresponding to positions 25 to 29 of human IAPP, is strongly amyloidogenic. Proline-for-serine substitution in position 28, found in several rodents including rat, almost completely inhibits formation of amyloid fibrils. |
