| Description |
This is amino acids 20 to 29 fragment of the cat islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), or amylin 20 to 29. Only a small number of animal species is known to show amyloidogenesis. These include human and nonhuman primates, cats, and raccoons, with this segment being important for amyloid formation. IAPP, a putative polypeptide hormone, is a product of pancreatic beta-cells and the major constituent of the amyloid deposits seen mainly in islets of type 2 diabetic humans and diabetic cats. The NFGAIL sequence, amino acid residues 22 to 27, forms aggregates similar to those of the entire IAPP. IAPP has been increasingly studied as a simple model for factors governing amyloid fibril formation. |
