Isolated originally from pig intestine, this proline and arginine rich 39 amino acid peptide is also found in neutrophil azurophilic granules and macrophages. This peptide plays a role in cell motility and metastatic potential in wound repair; binds to NADPH oxidase complex protein p47phox7 and a signaling adaptor protein p130Cas. And recently, PR39 is found to inhibit hypoxia-induced apoptosis and decrease caspase-3 activity in endothelial cells.
