This is amino acids 83 to 119 fragment of the SmD1 protein (D1 protein of the Sm proteins), one of the small nuclear ribonucleoproteins of the splicing machinery. It is a major target of the B and T cell autoimmune responses associated with human and murine lupus. T cells that recognize this SmD peptide and provide T cell help for both anti-dsDNA and anti-SmD1 (83–119) antibodies were recently identified in lupus-prone NZB/W mice, revealing a new model that may help to explain associations between these autoantibodies.
