This is amino acids 1 to 10 fragment of rat neuropeptide S, rNPS, the endogenous ligand of an orphan G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR). Central administration of NPS promotes behavioral arousal and suppresses all stages of sleep in rodents. NPS may induce transient increases of intracellular Ca2+, indicating that it might have excitatory effects at the cellular level. NPS receptor can couple to intracellular Ca2+. The pharmacophore of NPS is contained within the N-terminal part of the peptide, and NPS 1 to 10 is a minimally active structure.
