This peptide is derived from apolipoprotein E (apoE) residues 131-169. ApoE is primarily synthesized by the liver but can also be found in the spleen, kidney, adrenals, gonads, and brain. It is a ligand for low-density lipoprotein receptors and is involved in cholesterol and lipid transport and metabolism. ApoE is associated with peripheral nerve injury and regeneration, immunoregulation, and regulation of cell growth and differentiation. It has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), arteriosclerosis, and familial type III hyperlipoproteinemia.
