Somatostatins are derived from a common 116-amino acid primary translation product called preprosomatostatin. Secreted by the hypothalamus, intestinal tract and pancreas and are widely distributed throughout the body, they are important regulators of endocrine and nervous system function. They inhibit the secretion of a variety of other hormones such as growth hormone and insulin. They also regulate a variety of gastrointestinal functions. Fasting increases somatostatin synthesis and receptor subtype expression.
