This peptide is part of the Histone 1 molecule obtained from MHC class II molecules of an antigen-presenting cell line fed with crude chromatin from lupus-prone mice. The H1'22-42 has been shown to be a potent stimulator of autoimmune T-helper cells and accelerated lupus nephritis when administered to lupus-prone mice. The H1′22–42 epitope was also found to be recognized by autoimmune B cells, and it's serum autoantibodies were shown to be increasingly cross reactive with nuclear autoantigens upon onset of lupus nephritis.
