This mastoparan modification, referred as mastoparan 7 (MP7), has Lys12 replaced by Ala12, and Ile13 replaced by Leu13. Mastoparan is an amphiphilic tetradecapeptide isolated from wasp venom. It is known to possess a variety of biological activities including mast cell degranulation, mobilization of Ca2+ from cerebellar microsomes and sarcoplasmic reticulum, and modulation of various enzymes. MP7 retains the ability to form α-helices in lipids and have similar hydrophobic moments to mastoparan. Mastoparan also inhibits the ATPase.
