Orexins are synthesized by posterolateral neurons in hypothalamus. They bind to orexin-1 (OxR1) and orexin 2 (OxR2) receptors. Orexin A can bind to both OxR1 and OxR2 while Orexin B can associate with OxR2 only. Both Orexins are involved in the regulation of arousal and sleep states, energy homeostasis, and autonomic central control.
